Mark A. Pitts, D.D.S. (Retired)
Meet Dr. Pitts
Dr. Mark A. Pitts is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. His broad background and up-to-date surgical training are strengths which help him provide the highest standard of care for all his patients. Dr. Pitts feels his practice “should exist to provide service to the community and to the individual patient’s needs.” He also believes “each patient should be treated with respect and kindness by me and all of my office staff, and receive only the best treatment possible.”
Dr. Pitts graduated with high honors from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1988 where he served as the President of the College of Dentistry and President of the American Student Dental Association, for which he received the American College of Dentists Dean’s Leadership Award. He was also inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Scholarship Society for his academic achievements. He continued his training as an intern at Harvard University School of Dentistry, Harvard School of Medicine, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He also held the position of Clinical Fellow at Harvard School of Dentistry during that time.
Following his internship, Dr. Pitts completed a residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (Shock Trauma) in Baltimore. He was fortunate to be trained by some of the most world-renowned and widely-published maxillofacial surgeons in the profession, who were very influential in helping him to excel in his field. His clinical training emphasized expertise in facial reconstructive surgery, treatment of facial deformities, head and neck cancer, temporomandibular joint therapy, management of traumatic injuries to the face and jaws, carbon dioxide laser surgery, bone grafting and soft tissue grafting procedures, and dental implantology, as well as thorough training in dentoalveolar surgery and general anesthesia and sedation for children and adults.
His clinical experience also included a number of fellowships at outside hospitals in the United States and abroad. Special training in the management of head and neck cancer in Liverpool, England and a humanitarian mission to a children’s hospital in Ecuador – with a team of surgeons to perform reconstructive surgery on children with facial deformities – are considered highlights.
He is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and has maintained that certification for over 20 years.
Dr. Pitts strongly believes in continuing to enhance his training and education to provide his patients with the best possible care. He regularly attends training seminars and conferences to enhance and broaden his surgical expertise, learn new surgical and anesthesia techniques, enhance his diagnostic skills, and modernize his practice to best serve his patient’s needs, and continue to provide the highest standard of care in the community.
Dr. Pitts has been in practice for over 20 years in Frederick and is an active member of the Frederick community. He has supported many local community service projects and the community arts projects through both individual financial support, and his active membership in the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek.
