Chin and Malar Implants
What are facial implants?
Facial implants are made to improve, balance, and enhance the appearance and structure of the face. Facial implants come in a variety of sizes. The size of implants will be determined by the patient’s desire, the features he/she wishes to correct and the surgeon’s judgment. There are different areas where facial implants can be placed. Common areas for facial implants are the chin, jaw and cheeks.
Chin Implants
Chin implants increase the size and projection of the chin. Often the chin is small or recessed therefore a chin implant will be placed. Chin implants allow an equally proportioned chin-forehead-mid-face ratio.
Jaw Implants
Jaw implants are used to widen the lower part of the face and give a well-defined jaw line. If the jaw is weak it could contribute to facial imbalance.
Cheek Implants
Cheek implants are used to increase the projection of cheekbones and add volume to flat areas on the face.
Before Surgery
A consultation with the surgeon will take place before the patient’s surgery. During the consultation the patient will be asked many questions about their medical history, lifestyle, and desired outcome. The consultation will also include a careful examination to evaluate their general health. The surgeon will discuss with the patient how their implant(s) will look in relation to other facial features. Photographs may be taken for medical record purposes. The surgeon will then give the patient preoperative instructions which may include eliminating certain drugs that contain aspirin to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding, and antibiotics may be prescribed before surgery to prevent infection.
Facial Implant Surgery
Before the surgeon begins, an anesthesiologist will administer intravenous sedation or general anesthesia to make this procedure as comfortable as possible. The location of implant(s) will determine where the surgeon makes his/her incision. Chin implant incisions are typically made inside the mouth where the lower lip meets the gum line. An alternative location for a chin implant incision is underneath the chin, near the submental crease line to create an esthetic scar in the fold. Jaw implant incisions are made inside the mouth where the cheek and lower gum line meet. Cheek implant incisions are also typically made inside the mouth; unless other procedures are being performed there are alternative locations for a cheek implant incision. Once the incision has been made the surgeon will make a pocket for the implant to sit. Once the pocket has been made the surgeon will slide the silicone implant through the incision and into the pocket where it fits securely. The surgeon will then close the incision with sutures or stitches that will be removed < 1 week after surgery.
After Surgery
Although the placement of facial implants is immediately visible after surgery, the results are not. After facial implant surgery, just like any other cosmetic surgery, there will be swelling and bruising. Along with swelling there could be discoloration, numbness and discomfort. The healing process will take several months, but once complete the results will be long lasting.
